Cathy lived in San Carlos for thirty years and was a girl scout leader herself. She was Diagnosed with DCIS (an early stage of breast cancer) in 2003 and had a mastectomy. She did not need chemo or radiation. “When you go through something like that, you find out who you are, who your friends are and you make new friends because they can help you and reconnect with old friends.” A year before she was diagnosed, the first San Carlos Relay for Life at Highlands Park was held. She participated in the event after her grandmother had died of ovarian cancer. When she participated in the Relay for Life, she found that she really enjoyed it. “[I] Learned that everyday is a gift, and you just can’t predict them. Cancer doesn’t discriminate and affects everyone.”

Favorite memory: First time she did relay for life, especially the luminarias spelling out hope

Favorite place: taking walks with friends in the hills or the beach

Favorite hobby: cooking
